How to Install and Remove a Gas Spring

Gas Springs (also referred to as Gas Struts of Gas Shocks) are found in a multitude of applications. They provide lift support to lids, doors, hatches, and more across varying industries with different operating environments.

Once a Gas Spring is chosen, installation of the part is the next step. There is some important information to remember when mounting a Gas Spring, such as always installing the component rod down. Inside the spring is oil that lubricates the seal and provides damping during extension, ensuring optimal performance with minimal wear and tear.

The oil needs to remain in contact with the seal so that it does not dry out and crack, and to allow proper damping during the extension stroke, impacting the longevity of the strut.

In order to mount a Gas Spring, end fittings are needed to attach the spring to the application. There are many styles of end fittings but for this example, we will discuss: SPD™ Safety Clip Ball Socket made with steel (Type A) and composite (Type B). Follow these simple instructions to secure or remove the end fittings to the spring.

Type A: SPD Steel Safety Clip Ball Socket

To Install
  1. Place the socket of the end fitting on top of the ball stud.
  2. Push until you hear a snap. No tools are required.
  3. Insert the straight end of the wire clip into the small hole located on the side of the end fitting.
  4. Push the clip all the way into the hole.
  5. Rotate the curved section and clamp it around the neck of the fitting. It will remain tightly in place.
  6. Repeat on the other end.

To Remove
  1. Insert the tip of a screwdriver under the wire clip to unclamp from the neck of the fitting.
  2. Rotate the clip
  3. Remove the sire clip by pulling it completely out of the fitting.
  4. Disengage the Gas Spring from the ball stud.
  5. Repeat on the other end.

Type B: SPD Composite Safety Clip Ball Socket

To Install
  1. Position the fitting of the ball socket over the ball.
  2. Lightly push until you hear a snap.
  3. Repeat on both sides.
Note: do not use a hammer or vice grips

To Remove
  1. Insert the tip of a screwdriver under the metal clip.
  2. Slightly pry to dislodge the clip.
  3. Gently pull the Gas Spring away from the stud. Be careful to not fully remove the clip.
  4. Repeat on both sides.
